RSS Information and Links
What is RSS?
RSS, sometimes known as Really Simple Syndication, is a popular means of sharing content (such as news headlines) without requiring readers to constantly visit a Web site to see what's new. RSS feeds contain hyperlinks to news items and updated web pages.
How can I receive RSS feeds?
As you may have already discovered, clicking on the orange RSS link (or XML link, depending on the site) yields XML code. To receive an RSS feed, you'll need what's known as an RSS reader or news reader. This software, which is normally free, can collect, update and display RSS feeds from a wide variety of sources (including the SPS feed, and popular news sites, like CNN and MSNBC). Google lists a number of news aggregators/RSS readers that you can download and test in this List of News Aggregators.
- Review the Google site (above), or do a search for RSS readers online.
- Download and install the RSS reader to your computer. You may need to contact your IT staff to install new programs on your computer.
- Subscribe to the SPS RSS feed by by copying the XML link location (right-click on the orange RSS feed button
and click "copy link location" or "copy shortcut") into your RSS reader. The reader will alert you when the feed has changed - i.e., when something has been added or updated.
- Use your RSS reader to check for updates to the SPS Web Site.
How is this helpful for the SPS Web Site?
Subscribing to the RSS feed allows you to see, at a quick glance, what items have been added or updated on our site. The feed will contain links to the updated/new information, so you can access it right away. The RSS feed will only contain actual updates/new links - you won't get a new feed for simple file corrections (like typos!).
